It was with deep sadness that I read the reports of Ian Slatem’s tragic death while leading a rock climbing group on Table Mountain on New Year’s Day.
Ian, a geologist by profession with a BSc Hons in Geochemistry from UCT and an MBA from Wits, was an accomplished mountaineer and adventure guide, having lead many groups of tourists on hikes and climbing expeditions in the mountains of the Western Cape - Du Toits Kloof, Cederberg, Montague and Winterhoek, as well as Table Mountain itself.
His passion for nature and the mountains he knew so well was infections, and with his thorough approach to everything he tackled, combined with a cautious nature, this accident comes a great shock to all who knew him well.
A keen sailor with a special interest in navigation and offshore racing, Ian was always ready to do more than his share on the administrative side of the sport. He served with dedication as chairman of the L26 Class Owners’ Association for the past five years, and in recent times as an ORC measurer. We had breakfast together at Royal Cape Yacht Club just before Christmas, and Ian spoke enthusiastically of his plans and hopes for the L26 Class in 2018.
I will miss Ian greatly, as will his many friends in the SA sailing community.
