Letter to Club Commodores

To all Yacht Club Commodores

On 22 February we announced that Royal Natal Yacht Club, winners of the Lipton Challenge Cup in 2021, had confirmed that they would defend the Cup on the waters of False Bay, Western Cape, between Wednesday 17th and Sunday 21st August 2022.

At the same time we stated our intention to open the 2022 Challenge to all boats with a valid ORC International Certificate and a Class Division Length (CDL) between 8.000 and 9.780. In terms of the Lipton Deed of Gift, this change required the support of a majority of the yacht clubs eligible to vote on the proposal.

The vote was duly conducted, and on 2 April we published the results – 22 clubs in favour of two ORC trial years in 2022 and 2023, and 1 club against the proposal.

There’s been a great deal of interest in this project, aimed at making the Lipton Challenge more accessible to more clubs around Southern Africa, and planning for the 2022 contest is on track. The formal Notice of Contest and Sailing Instructions were published today, and a copy can be found here: https://liptoncup.com/backend/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/2022-Notice-of-Contest-Sailing-Instructions-version-1-004-4.pdf.
