It’s hard to believe that the 70th Lipton Challenge Cup is just 80 days away with the first race scheduled for 27 August on Table Bay.
The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) who are defending the Lipton Cup have selected a strong team which is headed by Mike Hayton aboard his Cape 31 ‘Nitro’. Hayton is no stranger to this event which he has won on two previous occasions – both aboard his trusty steed ‘Nitro’.
As entries only close a month prior to the first race, there is additional interest countrywide, and the organisers are aware of up to eight additional entries in various stages of preparation. With a wide range of yachts being considered by the yet to be announced teams, this could develop into one of the most interesting contests for some years.
Live-streaming of the contest will be available, as will voice bytes to a dedicated Lipton Whatsapp group, and trackers on each yacht enabling followers to view the race live from wherever they are in the world. Obviously, there will be a massive social media presence throughout the contest.
Ashore, an enticing social programme is being prepared for competitors and supporters alike and will include the RCYC “Lipton Legends” who have previously won the Lipton Cup for their Club.
The City of Cape Town is fully behind this 70th contest and backing the Royal Cape Yacht Club to make this one of the best Lipton Cup Contests ever.
